ScottishPower Renewable Energy Limited (hereafter referred to as “ScottishPower Renewables”) is proposing to develop a Demonstration Tidal Array (hereafter referred to as the ‘Tidal Array’) in the Pentland Firth. The proposed Tidal Array would have a capacity in the range of 10-20MW of renewable power for export to the grid and would contribute to meeting the Scottish Government’s targets of providing 50% of Scotland’s electricity generation from renewable sources by 2020.
The Tidal Array would consist of up to 20 submerged demonstration tidal streamgenerating devices. The candidate demonstration tidal device will be based on an existing 300kw prototype device that is currently undergoing a period of research, development and testing. It is envisaged that the existing prototype will be developed to provide a larger scale demonstration device, in terms of potential output (1-1.5MW).
The Pentland Firth fills and drains the North Sea twice a day - water flows of up to 3 million tons a second.
Please note that where multiple DECC rcords are available, all are shown in order. eg Project then repowering / extension, or refused project then resubmitted.
