On April 4, Viking Energy was granted permission to build what will be one of the most productive wind farms in the world.
The wind farm will consist of 103 wind turbines up to 145m tall to the blade tips, set in the central Mainland of Shetland. The consent allows a potential output of up to 457 megawatts, which would make it the third-largest wind farm in Scotland.
If a 3.6MW turbine is used the maximum output would be 370.8MW – enough to meet the electricity needs of up to 335,000 homes[1] while saving 0.61 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions each year.

Viking Energy, the joint venture between the Shetland community and Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), submitted its application for a 150-turbine, 540 megawatt wind farm on Shetland to the Scottish Government on Wednesday 20 May 2009.
Viking Energy is a 50:50 partnership between Viking Energy Ltd and SSE Viking Ltd. SSE Viking Ltd is a subsidiary of Scottish and Southern Energy plc. Viking Energy Ltd is the company established to represent the interests of the Shetland community in large-scale windfarm development in Shetland.

A revised application was consented again by Scottish Ministers in May 2019, following approval by Shetland Islands Council in December 2018.

Onshore back in business with 1.5GW win
SSE Renewables netted a contract for 220MW of its VIKING wind farm - half of the Shetland project's 443MW overall capacity - in the round's largest offer. Brockwell Energy’s 212MW North Kyle project in East Ayrshire followed in a close second.
