Drax plans to convert three of its six generating units to run on sustainable biomass; the first unit was converted in the second quarter of 2013, and the second and third will be converted in April 2015, and at the earliest the fourth quarter of 2015, respectively. In the meantime, Drax will operate one of our coal units as an enhanced co-firing unit from May 2014; it is this unit that will be converted in April 2015.
(As a coal fired power station) Its generating capacity of 3,960 megawatts is the highest of any power station in the United Kingdom and Western Europe, providing about 7% of the United Kingdom's electricity supply.
I do not have any information on the MW output / capacity based on Biomass. Estimated as 585MW being one biomass unit.
Drax plans to spend as much as 700 million pounds ($1.13 billion) through 2017 upgrading its boilers at Selby, northern England, ordering millions of tons of biomass from around the world and building facilities to store the fuel, including four silos each bigger than London’s Royal Albert Hall, a 135-foot (41-meter) high concert venue with an 800-foot circumference.
The utility has hired farmers and foresters, designed special railway carriages and is investigating building wood pellet plants in North America, Thompson said.
