Renewable Energy - Commercial
Commercial generation of renewable energy is starting to catch on and is moving from the small number of early adopters to mainstream as the economics of local generation are shown to stand up to scrutiny.
Whereas in the domestic setting, energy is norm
ally generated when the home is empty while people are at work and thus might rely somewhat on exporting (electricity) or storing (hot water). For the commercial user who generates their own energy, this disparity between generation and use is not seen.
Any electricity generated can be considered to reduce the requirements for bought in power, the same for solar thermal where the bought in power would otherwise go towards heating water throughout the day. - see our solar thermal case study.

While Grants are not aimed at the commercial sector, the ability to make very beneficial tax reductions on capital purchase of renewable energy equipment can emphasis the business and cost benefit of these systems.
The Enhanced Capital Allowance Scheme (ECA) scheme is a key part of the Government’s programme to manage climate change. It provides businesses with enhanced tax relief for investments in equipment that meets published energy-saving criteria.
100 per cent first-year Enhanced Capital Allowances (ECA) allow the full cost of an investment in designated energy-saving plant and machinery to be written off against the taxable profits of the period in which the investment is made. The general rate of capital allowances for spending on plant and machinery is 25% a year on the reducing balance basis. |
