About the Renewable Energy Map
Project lists:
Wind Farms | Hydro Schemes | Biomass | Waste | CHP | Wave & Tidal | Solar |
I want to make this resource even better, can you help, please click here
Started in 2008 and still going strong!
Renewables Map now allows user defined data downloads for subscribers.
All active wind turbines with make, model, capacity, exact latitud, Longitude and elevation can now be downloaded and used within your own systems.
Downloads can be either CSV or KML for direct use in such as Google Earth.
Downloads allow for easy cross referencing between Renewables map data, OFGEM data and DECC data, the latter two only connected project by projectr within the renewables map dataset
Downloads can be generated from here: csv and kml downloads
Help! Tell me how to generate a CSV or KML
Generate a CSV or KML Listing
(1) Select by: First stage is to enter the details of how you wish to "select by". Simply what restrictions you want to place on your listing so you only list the projects that are relevant to you.
For example, if you want to see all active solar farms in Cornwall, ensure that Solar is ticked, use the county drop down to select cornwall and tick the Live button
This will define which projects are listed, you now need to confirm what elements of those projects are displayed
(2) Show: The second part of the process is where you define what is included for display with each project.
Simply tick each display entry and these make up the contents of the csv or kml record that is generated. So, for a simple listing of all projects by name and capacity, tick Project Name and Capacity from the RM (Renewables Map) column.
(3) Generate:Now that you have selected which projects you want to see and what elements, click on the type of data download needed. Generate CSV or KML. The csv will create a comma seperated variable file that can be loaded directly into such as a spreadsheet, the KML will generate a "Keyhole Markup Language" dataset that can be used directly in a GIS system such as Google Earth. The file is generated server side, or "In the cloud" waiting to be downloaded. You will see a summary of the 1st 5 records. Regenerate this list - changing what is to be downloaded - until you are happy that it matches your requirements
(4) Download:With the summary listing showing your requirements, the full list can be downloaded (subscribers only). Depending on your browser and the way the downloads are handled, clicking on a csv download will most likely automatically open your spreadsheet, clicking on the KML will open Google Earth and show projects.
For non subscribers, only the first 5 entries will be available for download.
The renewable energy map was originally developed to fill what was a gap in information about the major renewable energy schemes in the UK, generally those over 1MW.
The data that has been gathered for the renewables map has invariably come from a wide range of web resources, in all cases these will be referenced, usually by a link to that information. Locations are either taken from existing data, usually from planning applications and the installers public data, or by painstakingly identifying the location on the ground using online maps. In each case I aim to cross reference between data sets.
Relying on single resources has proven problematic as many projects are shown as being in very different locations to where they really are, an error that is corrected on the renewables map.
In the case of wind farms, this now increasingly includes individual turbines - about 6,000 so far identified with detailed locations.
Some data is coming from web site visitors, this is really appreciated and helps to make the map ever more accurate. The donated information is taken very seriously and in some cases updated on to the map while the user is still continuing to browse!
The map is subject to constant development, both with the volume of data displayed, the efficiency and speed of display and other ways of using the data.
In addition to what is shown, I also store: Hub heights; Turbine data; detailed latitude and longitude; county; elevation.
Current plans see: Proposed developments to the map
If you have any views, information or ideas, please tell me. Also, please feel free to link to the map!
Copying the data: Please don't try to copy this wholesale in order to make a competing map - really, is there any point? Should you wish to have access to the data for a particular project, please feel free to ask, I am very approachable.
